#fromkurilswithlove essentially was a film production trapped on a boat. That means that there were enormous amounts of gear on board and they were spilling everywhere. @_ryanhill_ assisted @chrisburkard on #fromkurilswithlove. And although the camera crew was travelling light, there still was an enormous amount of equipment to take care of. They only brought less than 20 bags with equipment -while it can easily be 100 in other shoots. Looking after the equipment, among other things, was Ryan's job. Here, he gives a short impression of his work and the challenges on board.#filming #expedition #kurils #kurilislands

"I woke up on, I believe, a Sunday morning to see my face over a two page spread of the Daily Mail. Media had actually posted my address in the paper, which meant now I had the risk of the bad guys I am fighting, knowing where I live."Marcus Hutchins @malwaretech became a cyber security hero when he stopped the WannaCry epidemic. And found himself in jail a few weeks later. His whole story on Tomorrow Unlocked, from October 25th.

Some days are bad. It can't get much worse than being arrested, leading the police to the place where you dropped the stolen money, hands tied and in heavy rain. Just to notice that someone took half of that money you were hiding. #hackerhunterseries on IGTV.

@rishisugla was a member of #fromkurilswithlove and is a regular contributor for tomorrowunlocked.com.From his latest article: "Is any of this really true - that a reusable mug is "greener" than a disposable cup? As it turns out, it depends on how you use your reusable coffee container. This is because, in part, it requires more CO2 emissions to produce than a disposable cup. Just to make up for emissions, it might need to be used up to 100 times in order to balance the emissions of a disposable cup. And it gets even trickier: "Sustainability" doesn't just mean reducing CO2 emissions, right? All the materials that combined make up everything we buy come at an environmental cost. If we take into account the materials used in a reusable coffee mug, the water it takes to wash it after each use, the soap and more - it may take over a thousand uses compared to a disposable mug to balance the overall environmental impacts. If you're anything like me and you tend to lose reusable mugs every now and then, this really calls into question whether it's an environmentally friendly purchase." Creating a documentary like hacker:HUNTER comes with challenges. For example: how do you film money flying around an ATM? The solution: force the producers on the floor, where they would throw fake money into ventilators. Did you know that some of the most spectacular parts of our planet are hidden from us? They are and we can't afford to forget about the tiny organisms living in worlds we aren't able to see. Because these tiny worlds keep our ecosystems - and us as humans that rely on them - moving along and functioning. @rishisugla wrote a great piece about new technologies that make the invisible visible, and revolutionize our ability to see how these species, which influence every other living creature in the ocean, may change in the years to come. Street artist Ben Eine @einesigns wants a loyalty card for #data. Read the whole story "Data, why can't I love you?" on our site. --- We had set up a store in Shoreditch's Old Street Station in London to find out how much value people place in their personal data. Our merchandise featured an exclusive letter K designed by London's street art icon Ben Eine – as an original art print, on T-Shirts and mugs. And people were ready to give us more or less anything, with little hesitation. It was at the end of two long days of standing in that shop and taking data from customers when I felt most uncomfortable for the first time. This guy, early twenties, looking east-London fashionable, wanted to buy a mug for which he would have to pay with three pictures from his phone. He did not hesitate for a second to unlock his smartphone and hand it over to me. Now I was flipping through naked and half-naked pictures of someone who seemed to be his girlfriend, just hoping to find any images we could actually display on the screens outside the store. He did not care the tiniest bit about handing these photographs to a complete stranger – but that stranger felt horribly awkward. I found a few seemingly meaningless pictures of buildings, sent them to our cash point and was relieved to return the phone and hand over the mug.#dataiscurrency #privacy #datavalue #data #popup

"It is time to write a new social contract and I think that social contract is no longer between citizens and their governments", filmmaker Karim Amer said after a pre-screening of his new film "The Great Hack" last week. "It is between citizens, governments and tech platforms, so perhaps it is the writing of a new user agreement that we should be focused on". It is a film not about hacking computers. It is about hacking society. It is a powerful appeal for stronger privacy rights and stronger control of the big digital near-monopolists. In conclusion: it is not an easy movie. After the screening, I heard somebody say it was "hard work" and "at times hysterical". Well, it is a serious, complicated and heavy subject that during the nearly two hours isn't always entertaining. It makes for a significant film nevertheless. Our advice: watch it!

Apparently we won't disembark Afina at the port, but instead we will ride the zodiacs to the shore. To transport all the people and equipment and bags will likely take a few hours. It does. Back on land we wait for the buses to take us to a hotel. A mountain of bags and gear lays motionless at the edge of the pier where we were dropped off by the zodiacs. This amazing adventure ends here, but the story surely will continue. However... we go to Korean bbq. That was absolutely delicious. Every kind of meat and vegetable we could possibly have we do. Speeches. Good ones. Some drinks. Club maybe? Sure why not. There is a club at the bottom floor of our hotel. And trust me, it's a place you want to be at with some friends. Buenas noches amigos. #fromkurilswithlove is back on land, the storytelling will continue.

After a few rounds on the zodiacs we make it to the island housing the lighthouse. Supposedly it's a lighthouse used during the 2nd world war. As we start our difficult ascend to it, it is evident that this is not a place humans visit often. The lighthouse has been completely overtaken by seagulls. It's their home. Beautiful, healthy, white seagulls, baby chicks and nests with eggs all over the place. We have to be very careful not to step on eggs as we climb. It is absolutely clear that we are not welcome here as the chicks and their worried parents chirp and scream as we are making our way up. We do our best not to disturb them but it's hard. The lighthouse is in really bad shape but the structure is obviously still super strong. As we go up the stairs, after clinging on to some cable ropes left by someone else to make it to the entryway, we can see the birds extremely close. Old decrepit rooms are seen on the way up. Some of the adult birds lift off when we get close to the chicks as we make our way up and then dart back down at us almost hitting us in the head. They are clearly in protection mode. We make it to the tip top of the lighthouse. The view is breathtaking and we can see Afina in the distance. The way down is tricky because of the structure and the birds. #fromkurilswithlove

It doesn’t look like much here, and we have much better drone footage from @tedhesser (check Teds Instagram for a sneak peak) @renan_ozturk @chrisburkard @_ryanhill_ and stills from @NatGeo photographer @jtkerby - but this whale is one of possibly only 40 living North Pacific Right Whales. The chances of us capturing footage of one in the middle of the Sea of Okhotsk, 120km and 14 hours from nearest land is astronomically small, and yet another example of how lucky we’ve been on this expedition. I’ve been told @nrdc_org has started a global initiative to try to save the remaining ones, so head over in their direction if you want to get behind it. Just a little something while I (@povel) sift the 500 close up photos I took on Tyuleny Island yesterday. The tranquility and cuteness in this video is highly misleading. Approximately 40,000 adult Fur Seals and Steller Sea Lions reside on this tiny 120x500m island at any given time, not counting the additional 140,000 that are out fishing, or the 40-50,000 pups. Including this one. Add to that about 400,000 Common Murrs (penguin looking bird), and throw is a bunch of Puffins, Seagulls and five of @bigdaddivladi dedicated PhD students using advanced technology to try and secure their future, and you got yourself one helluva party. (A big part of the PhD students work include using algorithmic technology to conduct daily counts of the seal population, what used to take 10 days of manually counting the animals in the 6000 drone images taken daily, now takes 3 hours thanks to clever technology) The constant roaring cacophony of sounds, the smell from hell and the rawest views of life and death all mixed into one big scene has certainly put a new perspective on these types of scenes in the David Attenborough (eg: @ourplanet ) nature documentaries that I have known and loved, and which have shaped much of my previous life as a dedicated couch explorer. #fromkurilswithlove essentially is a film production trapped on a boat. That means that there are enormous amounts of gear on board and they are spilling everywhere. There is a gear room in cabin number one - but quickly the gear started spilling over into any free area on the boat (which is totally not appreciated by the crew). Eau De Tyulenyi: The smell in the air around the island is nasty. A combination of excrement and decaying body smell combine to form what we are calling Eau d'Kuril. This is a very smelly and raw place to say the least. Life is abundant here but there are also many bodies of seals, sea lions and birds all over the place. It is especially hard to see bodies of pups that didn't make it. After a few hours on the island observing wildlife and shooting some interviews some of us head back on the zodiac back to the boat. We will also be at Tyulenyi all day tomorrow. #FromKurilsWithLove @renan_ozturk @taylorfreesolo @chrisburkard @rishisugla @tedhesser @_ryanhill_ @povel @e_kaspersky @kasperskylab @ollyru999 @alejandroarango13 @bigdaddivladi @donreverendo
