Elephant ivory is almost indistinguishable from woolly mammoth ivory. That's a problem..Though mammoths are extinct, the climate crisis has exposed mammoth ivory in once-frozen regions and caused a spike in the largely unregulated trade. This has also allowed for the potential laundering of illegally obtained elephant ivory disguised as being from a mammoth..“It’s ironic that an extinct species may be helping drive depletion of an existing species,” says WCS’s Sue Lieberman, “but that’s what may be happening.”.This week at #CITESCoP18, Israel has proposed a way to help: list the woolly mammoth on #CITES Appendix II, which means its trade will be regulated to ensure it’s legal and sustainable. The plight of songbirds like the white-rumped shama is being heard today at #CITESCoP18..Under severe threat from habitat loss and exploitation for trade, these beautiful birds may be silenced if we don’t take actions now on their behalf. This is a global problem..This morning, it was good to see governments take a step toward addressing it. Mako sharks are the cheetahs of sharks. The shortfin in particular is capable of bursts of over 40 miles per hour..But longfin and shortfin species are unable to outswim the threat of overfishing. In the last 75 years, both have seen declines of approx. 90% in the Atlantic Ocean..At the ongoing #CITESCoP18 meeting, they should gain new protections from international trade. Today is the start of #CITESCoP18. At the meeting, writes WCS's Sue Lieberman on @mongabay, the saiga must be moved to CITES Appendix I (which prohibits international commercial trade in threatened species)..However, some governments and trade interests have focused more on the less-endangered populations in Kazakhstan and elsewhere than the critically endangered Mongolian saiga population..If the species is to persist in healthy herds, Lieberman writes, governments should ensure that all saiga receive the highest level of protection..Read more at wcs.org...#CITES #saiga #endangered #appendixi #conservation #wildlifetrade #wildlifeconservation #wildlife #mongolia #kazakhstan #asia #herd

Excellent news out of Nigeria. There have been no elephants poached in four years in Yankari Game Reserve, which contains the country’s largest elephant population, now slowly recovering after an onslaught of killing ended in 2015..WCS, which helps manage the protected area, attributes the success to well-managed, well-equipped and highly trained rangers who patrol the 866-square-mile reserve, which also supports important populations of lion, buffalo, hippo, roan and hartebeest..Yankari’s elephant population remains stable at 100-150 individuals, and is expected to grow in the coming years, provided that conservationists remain steadfast in keeping poachers out of the reserve..The announcement was made just days before officials gather for the meeting of CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. The success underscores the importance of tightening up the closure of importing countries’ domestic ivory markets, along with vigilant anti-poaching and anti-trafficking efforts...#elephant #96elephants #nigeria #conservation #wildlife #citescop18 #cites #wildlifephotography #success #goodnews

Papua New Guinea has the third largest tropical rainforest on the planet, but there is a plan to double its road network over the next three years..In a new paper, researchers illustrate that the new roads would dissect more than 50 of the country’s critical habitats, home to rare species such as Goodfellow’s and Matchie’s tree kangaroos (like these) and several birds of paradise. They would also open up areas to hunting, logging, and land-conversion, including carbon-rich peatlands..Read about it via our bio. Before 2015, Mozambique's Niassa Reserve had lost thousands of elephants due to rampant organized crime. This summer, we reported with our partners a total shift: one year without an elephant poached..What made the difference? Those on the ground attribute the success to a collaborative effort with the Government of Mozambique and concession operators in the park, combined with deployment of a special police rapid intervention unit; an increased aviation program providing surveillance and the deployment of a helicopter and Cessna aircraft; and tough new sentencing of poachers..Today is #WorldElephantDay and we want to thank you helping to make successes like this possible.
