This sectional model offers a glimpse of the structure of the Cadet Chapel at the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado. The chapel, designed by Walter Netsch and completed in 1963, was the culminating architectural element of SOM’s master plan and design of the whole USAFA campus. With its powerful geometry, the building established the academy’s reputation as a masterwork of Modernist architecture. The building features a succession of 17 glass and aluminum spires (three of which are included in this model), with each composed of 100 tetrahedrons.#Architecture #Design #ColoradoSprings #ArchModelMonday

What’s old is new again at the West Loop branch of the @chicagopubliclibrary. The first branch in its neighborhood, the library offers a contemporary cultural and social center for West Loop residents while preserving a piece of the neighborhood’s architectural heritage. Across two existing conjoined buildings, formerly part of the Harpo Studios campus, a weathered steel exterior unifies the facade and leads to a steel-framed entrance. Inside, visitors find a loft-like space that reflects the local factory-warehouse style.Photo © @tomharrisphotography#Architecture #Design #Chicago #Library #AdaptiveReuse

@seandavidson caught the Solow Building catching some sun in Midtown Manhattan. Designed by Gordon Bunshaft, and also known as 9 West 57th Street, the office tower is widely recognized for its sweeping glass facades that slope outward as they approach street level. Upon its completion in 1974, the building demonstrated new possibilities for curtain wall design.#Architecture #Design #NewYorkCity #SolowBulding #9West57th #Regram #ThrowbackThursday

Come for the views. Stay for the style. At @guocotower in Singapore, a glass-floored viewing deck offers panoramic views of the city and nearby sea. The 64-story tower, one part of the larger Guoco Tower complex, combines luxury residential units on the upper floors with commercial space below. Rounding out the complex, an adjacent 20-story structure houses the @sofitelsingaporecitycentre hotel, while Tanjong Pagar City Park at base level offers a green retreat in a bustling city.Photo © @studioperiphery#Architecture #Design #Singapore #Rooftop

School’s almost back in session at @ucsantabarbara, where we worked with a team of firms to design an extensive new student housing system known as the San Joaquin Villages. Together, the components of the project—the Tenaya Towers, shown here in detail; four additional residential complexes by @loharchitects and @kda_studio; the Portola Dining Commons by @kierantimberlake; and a @tlslandarch-designed landscape connecting them all—accommodate more than 1,000 enrolled students. In addition to designing the Tenaya Towers, we’re proud to have designed the project's overall master plan.Photo © @brucedamonte#Architecture #Design #CampusDesign #UCSB

The expressive form of Hangzhou Wangchao Center—a mixed-use skyscraper in the works in Hangzhou, China—is the result of an integrated architectural and engineering solution. Eight sloping mega-columns are designed to minimize wind forces while creating flexible floor plates for both office and hotel space.#Architecture #Design #Engineering #Skyscraper #China

The New York City sky shines bright in this shot taken at Manhattan West, a development built over Penn Station’s active rail tracks. In addition to designing three towers within the development, we engineered the concrete deck that bridges the rail tracks to create 1.5 acres of new open space—a significant neighborhood amenity for the rapidly transforming Far West Side.Photo © Lucas Blair Simpson | SOM#Architecture #Design #ManhattanWest #NewYorkCity#Skyscraper

@resh510 went high to capture this view of the former John Hancock Center (now known as 875 North Michigan Avenue) in Chicago. Completed in 1970, the skyscraper was quickly celebrated for its innovative design—a tapered tower in which the steel frame provides structural support as well as a distinctive profile. Its exterior diagonal bracing is one of the tower’s most recognizable features, whether from an elevated vantage point or at street level.#Architecture #Engineering #Design #Chicago #Regram #ThrowbackThursday

Step into The Milstein Center at @barnardcollege, where tradition merges with 21st-century learning. Set at the heart of Barnard’s Morningside Heights campus, the building was designed to help the New York City liberal arts university carry forth its 125-plus-year legacy of educating women. In addition to housing the school’s new library, The Milstein Center provides interdisciplinary workspaces and state-of-the-art multimedia labs, keeping pace with evolving modes of knowledge sharing.Photo © @magdabiernat#Architecture #LibraryDesign #NewYork #BarnardCollege

Research meets professional training at @ucsf’s Sandler Neurosciences Center. The five-story facility, located in San Francisco’s Mission Bay neighborhood, is home to some of the world’s leading neuroscience research and treatment programs. Completed in 2012, the building provides flexible space for scientists and graduate students to investigate brain disease and treatment. We designed the project in collaboration with UCSF, Clark Construction, McCarthy Cook and others as part of a public-private partnership design-build team. Work isn't all fun and games—or so they say. Some talented interns recently put this theory to the test, and their skills on display, for the inaugural Big Build Test Day in our New York office. Divided into four teams, structural engineering, architecture, and interior design interns designed and built model towers. In front of a panel of judges, the towers were weighed and measured to gauge total materials usage, and underwent drift and load tests to assess performance. #Architecture #Design #ArchModelMonday #Interns

What’s at the core of 21st-century medical training facilities? For Geffen Hall, the home of @ucla’s medical school, high-tech, interactive, and student-centered learning drove our design. The six-story building, set around a central courtyard, provides classrooms of varying size that support problem-based learning, as well as clinical skills labs, an auditorium and other spaces.
