Wolves deep in #DenaliNationalPark, Alaska. Leading their offspring to new hunting grounds, the Iron Creek pack’s breeding pair breaks trail through fresh snow with the female leading. I watched this pack over the course of 3 days as they devoured a Moose and then was lucky enough to catch them as they left the kill site crossing this large unbroken field of snow. Much of the rest of the park had less snow from a warm dry winter and it was harder to see the wolves in the patchy brown and green of the trees. This shot was the result of a little luck, but mostly relentless searching for the right pack in the right photo conditions. The payoff was worth the time put in! Shot on assignment for @natgeo #wolves #alaska

One of my favorite photos from #Svaneti, Georgia! Lit-up by burning birch torches in the shadows of 13th century towers, villagers in Mulakhi pour alcohol on the graves of relatives in a ceremony/festival called Lamproba (Lamps Festival). The festival pre-dates the arrival of Christianity and is one of the oldest preserved traditions in the region of its kind. Ive heard two stories of its meaning: One says the lamps were to warm the souls of the dead, another story said it was a pagan ritual asking the deities for healthy crops and good weather. #Sakartvelo for @natgeo

The villages of Ushguli in #Svaneti (Georgia) are even more dramatic when the snows fall! Completely cut off from the outside world on days like this, these UNESCO world heritage sites look as they must have when these defensive towers were built in the 13th Century. An unpublished photo from an assignment for @natgeo.

At the Quiricoba Festival in Kala, #Svanetia (in the country of Georgia), young men compete to lift a 300+ lb stone, with the goal of throwing it over their head to land behind them. Most cannot get the stone off the ground. Shot on assignment for @NatGeo. #StrongMan Contest #Sakartvelo #DinosaurEgg?

An older image of mine that feels more timely every year. I wrote a short piece about this assignment for @harpersmagazine called “a temporary apocalypse” talking about the feeling of dropping into emergency zones like big wildfires. But now all these temporary apocalypses seem to be merging into one big one that never end... #wearetheasteroid (From the Yorba Linda-Corona fire of 2008)

#Sponsored by @GeorgiaTravel // A long time ago, with my first camera, I was lucky enough to stumble into the country of Georgia and it changed my life. It was waaaay off the beaten path, and #Svanetia, an isolated region surrounded by 17,000 ft peaks, where villages are still made up of clusters of 13th Century defensive towers, was like a dream made real. It is still a place that feels completely out of time with hikes among the clouds for the adventurous traveller. To see more of this stunning country follow #GeorgiaTravelMoments
