Yaletown Residence — the Kitchen.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀This kitchen is probably the nicest kitchen I’ve ever designed. It’s former self was likely the ugliest and most awkward kitchen I’ve renovated. Reconfiguring kitchens in condos is challenging to say the least. Michael of @woodquestconstruction made it seem effortless.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Our Texan clients are quintessential Texans; honest, friendly, and straightforward. Their accents put you at ease immediately. Designing people’s private spaces means you really need to know and understand your clients. Their dreams, their family dynamic, their dislikes, what brings them joy.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀This family happily brought me right into their world, which allowed me the ability to translate their desires into this amazing kitchen. Even though they were in Texas when choosing the marble for the backsplash, for example, we made the decision together.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Stained oak predominates the interior, and white lacquer was added to balance the wood, here in the upper cabinets. They almost disappear and reduce the sense of bulk and clutter. White quartz frames the work area like a piece of art. The marble backsplash brings in a subtle natural element.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I can’t say enough about working with the right team of people who excel at what they do, and also value the client relationship and take time to understand the expectations. Millwork beautifully executed by @lauten_woodworking, quartz and stone by @bordignonmarbleandgranite, all coordinated by @woodquestconstruction.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Let’s cook....⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀2018 Award of Merit by the @idibcphotography @emaphotographistyling @poisiemeaccessories @informinteriors

Yaletown Residence — the Entry.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀A Yaletown condo for a wonderful family from Texas. They wanted a modern interior that would be forgiving of their casual lifestyle and active teenagers. Definitively not Texan, this interior is more restrained and modern than their home south of the border. The only must have was to be surrounded by wood.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀This was a 14 month long renovation and everything was stripped back to the condo shell and meticulously rebuilt by @woodquestconstruction, with millwork by @lauten_woodworking, and flooring by @frontierluxury.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The entry welcomes visitors with art by @nzeboboris, chosen by the client. The Riva Curve Bench is at once a sculpture and a functional element to put on ones shoes or drop the mail.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Welcome home....⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀2018 Award of Merit by the @idibcphotography @emaphotographistyling @poisieme

I am looking forward to seeing this film about #AndoTadao — Just Meet.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Ando was the first Japanese modern architect I discovered while living in Osaka from 1994-1997. I visited as many local projects of his as I could, including the Church of the Light. Back then you could just walk in. 😉⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I was completely in awe of this project...what he did with the cross in the concrete...it opened my mind up to amazing possibilities.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀This simple cross-shaped cut out in concrete, it represented so much more to me. I was 24 years old, and I felt like I had just woken up. I realized then that we should be questioning everything instead of just accepting what we’re told.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀***This was before the internet, we need to be even more vigilant today. #visitrealbuildings

Andrea was born in Winnipeg, on the Canadian prairies, and now lives and works in Vancouver.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀She holds a degree in Interior Design from Kwantlen Polytechnic University (1998), as well as a Master of Architecture from the University of British Columbia (2008). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Andrea’s design work focuses almost entirely on residential building design and interiors. Her approach to design and her relationship to her clients is thoughtful and honest. Context is a big contributor to her work, no two projects are the same. She stays critical of the design process throughout the duration of the project, always focusing on the why, “why does it matter?”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Andrea has been selected for various awards, but the one she is most proud of is the Abraham Rogatnik Book Prize for her architectural thesis, Community Architecture: Native Housing in Bella Coola, awarded for “creative and poetic talent in a design that also enriches the environment, and inspires the spiritual lives of the people using that environment.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀In her practice, Andrea's projects have won Awards of Excellence and Merit at the IDIBC Shine Awards in 2017 and 2018. Most recently, she won the jury award in the 2019 Architizer awards for her West 19th Garage & Landscape project in the Private Garden category.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Her work has been published in Dwell, Western Living, Western Living Condo, Canadian House & Home, and Montecristo. In 2016, Andrea served as a juror on for the Lighting Architecture Movement Project (LAMP). In addition to her design practice, Andrea is also the co-founder of The Aviary, Vancouver's first co-working studio for designers and architects. Andrea has lived in Osaka and Tokyo, Japan for five years combined, which was a huge influence on her architecturally and culturally. She has also studied and travelled extensively in Cuba and speaks fluent Spanish. These two islands couldn’t be more different, so they have allowed her to see the world through a more diverse lens.

You can create a custom built-in cabinetry look by combining several @ikeacanada products - Sektion kitchen cabinets, Besta living room cabinets, Pax bedroom cabinets. Make sure you choose the matte white cabinet door option for each. #andreamcleanstudio #ikea

I work in imperial scale. Typical interior design standards - A kitchen counter is 36” high. A table is 29” high. I like bathroom vanities at 34” high.

Sneak peek of some new work - West Twenty Seventh Garage, Cabana & Landscape Design - a backyard pavilion, aka the Cabana, carefully nestled in a private urban oasis. Tricky zoning and convoluted building permit navigation paid off, and this little building is simply perfect.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Another wonderful collaboration with @teer_co on landscape, and @emaphotographi capturing it beautifully. Contracting @john_stimac, Glazing @_panoramah_ via @atlasmeridian. chair @vanspecial, styling @poisieme. Thanks team 👏🏻

West Nineteenth Garage & Landscape - voting for the @architizer A+ Awards is open until Friday, and @teerco and I would love your support. We really appreciate everyone's votes so far, thanks to all our wonderful friends and family. This project has been so fun, and rewarding. It's the summary of more than just technical know how and a modern aesthetic. For me it's been about love, relationships, trust, and dedication. Being a working mother in architecture and learning the ropes on my own has been challenging at times, but I have learned so much. Many thanks to @mark.derraugh @sharenmclean @teer_co @woodquestconstruction @pwscontracting.
