After pouring your heart and soul into a piece of work, something that has taken significant time, effort and money, it is often very nerve wracking releasing it into the world. Years ago I decided I was not going to subject myself to this self-doubt anymore, constantly second guessing my own work and wondering if people will like it. My decision was to create what I wanted to create, put it out without a second thought and then let everyone else decide whether it’s good or not.▫️It was a freeing experience and like with anything there are always going to be those who love it, those who hate it and those who are indifferent. It’s always nice when the scales tip towards the love but I also like to push away from the norm and experiment with different concepts and ideas.▫️This image is a fine example of that. I wanted to create something a bit more intimate during my trip to the Durham coast recently. The triangular shape of the rock instantly struck me along with the arch and the exquisite detail. It has clearly been witness to a part of our industrial coal mining history and has been worn away by the sea over hundreds of years. It was for this reason I wanted to remove the sea from the equation with a long exposure. Simply using it to create a type of negative space around the rock to frame it in the image.▫️The outcome? After the video went out many commented how much they loved it and an equal number said they did not like it. Polarised opinions are not on their own a negative thing. They should be celebrated in fact, happy that we have such varied cultures and ideas. What is important is to talk about these differing opinions, search for understanding, show cognitive empathy and find a common ground in order to compromise. It takes strength to maintain this position though, especially in the face of hate…..it’s important to try though.▫️#landscapephotography #durham #naturephotography #seascapephotography #ordnancesurvey #longexposure #longexposurephotography #firstmanphotography

It has become very trendy to say that we care more about the ‘why’ than the ‘how’. I used to be absolutely obsessed with the ‘why’ but I have come to the conclusion that it might not be all that relevant. I recently read the book ‘Sapiens’ which reminded me that we are essentially just animals. We convince ourselves that we are somehow more important than other living creatures and asking ‘why’ is all part of seeking out some greater purpose, when perhaps there isn’t one.▫️It’s particularly true of human behaviour….asking ‘why?’ is usually pointless and generates no outcome. I see it all the time with parents after their child has done something ‘naughty’. “Why did you do that?” - I always think, ‘they don’t f***ing know, it just felt good in the moment’. A better question to ask yourself as a parent, or any kind of investigator is, ‘what was the reason they did that?’. With that in mind you could then ask them a more open question like ‘Tell me about what just happened’ It forces a more practical and tangible answer and avoids the ambiguous nature of ‘why’. If your kid can’t talk yet choose any of the following - they’re hungry; they’re tired; they were trying to make their mates laugh; some other kid tried to take their s**t.▫️As photographers allowing the why to enter our minds is probably a good start. We are not painters though…….we can’t just dip a brush into the paint and let it swish across the canvas in some kind of psychedelic trip. At some point we have to get practical, to bring everything down into an interesting composition. We need to know all of the ‘how’ in detail to work the camera, process the image and produce the final print. It’s the marriage of art and technology that makes me love photography so much.▫️See how this image was made in the latest video. It’s a deeply held belief of mine that life and photography are intrinsically linked. Allowing your life experience to flow into your artwork will undoubtedly make you better and open up a deeper connection to what you are creating. I see street photographers doing this all the time as they think carefully about the story and the way in which they use shape, light and carefully position people in the frame with good timing. Landscape Photographers often find it more difficult. By nature we are often very technical, precise, practical and logical. These are attributes that serve the landscape photographer well because a great shot will often take a huge amount of planning. Getting in touch with our artistic side (and emotions) is another matter that many find very hard. ▫️ With the re-launch of my Podcast now called the Raw Room Photography podcast I want to start sharing more of my experiences that have shaped my life and now affect my work. I am not always sure exactly how it is guiding me but I know it is - crazy stuff I saw from the aftermath of terrorist attacks, terrible car crashes, tragic domestic situations and murders. I was also attacked with a knife on three separate occasions which was always interesting. However there were also amazing moments like the Olympics and many many funny moments. These formative experiences shape my life philosophy that, consciously or not, drives my photography. ▫️ There is an easier way though. Simply return to a location that means something to you. A place in your past that was relevant or special. That’s exactly what I did with this shot from the Durham Coast. I tell the story in my latest video and it turned into a fantastic day out with my dad (swipe for the selfie). ▫️ #landscapephotography #durham #naturephotography #seascapephotography #blackandwhite #ordnancesurvey #longexposure #longexposurephotography #firstmanphotography #monochromatic #mono #monochrome

I am absolutely blown away by all the comments on the last image. It very much proves my point that the good and the positive will out. There were so many that deserved a solid reply but I hope you can accept a collective thank you…….they all meant a lot……you guys rock!!▫️Spending time with @charlie_waite over the last couple of years has been a great experience and consuming his work again recently has inspired me. It has inspired me to photographically move forward without limits. I see so many photographers limiting their own creativity and I am guilty of it too. It comes from only photographing what we ‘like’ and not looking a little deeper when consuming the work of others. Black and white landscape photography is good example of this. It doesn’t have the instant attention grabbing wow factor but, studied more closely, can often reveal something very special.▫️Not sure this image achieves that but I loved the subtle tones caused by the sunlight trying to force its way through the clouds…..perfect for the mono conversion.▫️#landscapephotography #peakdistrict #naturephotography #chromehill #sunset #ordnancesurvey #sunsetphotography #firstmanphotography

First Man Photography has been going for over four years now and I have barely had a day off. Burn out is a serious issue for independent content creators and I think I came very close. Coupled with a torrent of abuse, negative waves, pointless criticism and the ill will I received for trying to make some money following my passion - it was obvious it was time for a break. Not a break from work (which I love) but a break from social media.▫️In that time I have focused on getting more sleep, being more active and being present in the moment….especially where my children are concerned. They grow up very fast and each moment spent with them is precious. ▫️I come back feeling invigorated, motivated and ready to take things to the next level. I will do that through focusing entirely on the positive things and positive people and being deliberate with my time. I have no time in my life for negativity and that includes the bitter and the twisted out there…..I pity you. We live in crazy times but it’s important to remember good stuff happens so much more often than the bad stuff, it just goes unreported.▫️Landscape Photographers will know it’s a bit like the great light. From time to time it is shrouded by the cloud. It’s always there though, shining brightly and eventually will burn its way through……it’s then down to us to allow ourselves to enjoy it.▫️#landscapephotography #peakdistrict #naturephotography #chromehill #sunset #ordnancesurvey #sunsetphotography #firstmanphotography #trees #peakdistrictphotography

My recent trip to Snowdonia rewarded me with a chance encounter with some of the beautiful Carneddau wild ponies. They were fantastically calm animals and observing them in this mountain environment was a real privilege.▫️Wildlife photography is not something I do often but when I do I find it incredibly challenging and rewarding. My approach is also to be purely an observer and feel no desire for interaction whatsoever. I have since discovered that some people do try and interact with these ponies to get a picture. My concern is that if everyone tried to do this it would cause the ponies a huge amount of unnecessary stress and potentially put them at risk. For me it is important to treat the landscape and wildlife with respect rather than my personal playground.▫️I managed to mostly stay out of sight and smell of the ponies. They eventually became aware I was there but by keeping still and not trying to get any closer they were totally comfortable and eventually calmly walked away from me without any stress.▫️#landscapephotography #snowdonia #naturephotography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #ordnancesurvey #snowdonia #snowdonianationalpark #carneddau

Sometimes the things that attract us visually in a landscape are much more specific and detailed than just a great view. It could be shape, light, drama in the weather or an overall feeling. The use of a long lens gives us a tool to purposely exclude elements from the scene and tell the story of the landscape with our own unique vision. The possibilities are almost endless.▫️This image is of Tryfan in Snowdonia and shot during my latest vlog. One of the most exciting parts of water drop photography is the ultimate creative control you have over the colour during post-production. Opposed to the subtle and delicate processing I apply to my landscapes, I enjoy the creative freedom where anything goes.▫️The Water Drop Photography Masterclass will be released into the Raw Room in the next few days and includes full details about all the possibilities when Post-Processing your images. It will also include a brand new Lightroom preset that I have used to create this image called ‘Purple Haze’.▫️You can subscribe to the Raw Room now by hitting the bio link and get it all for just £5.99/month, cancel anytime. People often ask me if it is possible to create water drop collisions without an electronic water dropper. This image is proof that it can although the results are very random and interesting and different to the typical crown.▫️This image is captured during the new Water Drop Photography Masterclass that will be out in the next few days in the Raw Room. I particularly enjoy how the light has naturally created different colours in the drop as it has collided and stretched out.▫️I did have to remove a few bubbles in post-production which we will also be looking at in the Masterclass but I always find this exciting that such images can be produced just with a hanging bag and some food colouring.▫️#waterdropphotography #waterdrop #macro #macrophotography #igdaily #water_perfection #waterdrops #waterdroplets #closeup #closeupphotography #water #watercolor_art #firstmanphotography #amazing_shotz

Sorry just reposting this one from Sunday. It got deleted somehow.▫️This image is taken from my new video that has just gone out tonight and is a collaboration with my fellow Photo Nerd, Paul G Johnson. Woodland photography puts me right outside my comfort zone. I'm not sure why. Its possibly because I enjoy the chaos and unpredictability of life. In the woods things are often more predictable and getting a good photo is about composing an image that calms the chaos. When the light is this good though things become much easier.▫️The editing video from the latest vlog will be out in the Raw Room tomorrow and you'll be able download the Raw files to have a go yourself.▫️The Raw Room is a new online platform for all photographers looking to get the absolute most out of their photography. It includes the full Landscape Photography Masterclass and lots lots more. Hit the bio link to check it out.▫️#landscapephotography #peakdistrict #naturephotography #ig_masterpiece #outdoorphotography #wood #woodlandphotography #trees #ordnancesurvey #sunsetphotography #starburst #sunstar

Posting my latest video has been an interesting experience. It initially stirred up a hornets nest of angry people who missed the point and didn't like the title.▫️The point of the video was questioning the importance of subjects like jpeg Vs Raw, digital vs film, dslr vs Mirrorless etc that take up 9 out of 10 photography conversations. Conversations around the technical aspects of photography that ultimately don't matter, change over the years and don't really affect the link between a photographers artistic vision and the final print or work.▫️There is clearly an inherent need in humans to progress technologically. Unlike any other artistic endeavour, photography seems particularly subjected to this and it's overwhelmed the conversation and has assisted in devaluing photography as a whole. Becoming technically proficient as a photographer is probably an important step but it's just the beginning. Its where the art then take us that makes the interesting conversations.▫️Image - somewhere in Norway just North of the Finnish border.▫️#landscapephotography #roseberrytopping #naturephotography #naturephotography #landscape_specialist #landscapelovers #igrefined #earthescope #blackandwhite #mono #norway #norwaynature

My love of landscape photography was ignited forever after a trip to Yosemite when I was sixteen. I was continually asking my friends mum to stop the car so I could get out and take a picture with my disposable Kodak armed with panoramic film (swipe to see). They started calling me Ansel Adams and he has been an inspiration ever since. ▫️ It therefore seems wrong that only a small portion of my work lives in black and white. It’s intriguing too when removing the colour forces extra emphasis on shape, texture, tone and light. ▫️ This picture is of Roseberry Topping in North Yorkshire taken during my mountain bike adventure the other week. Swipe right to see an alternative edit using the ‘Cinematic’ included with your subscription to the Raw Room. It also includes the entire Landscape Photography Masterclass.
