From WW: “Yesterday Tony Baldessari called me with the sad news of his father’s passing which sent my mind spiraling back over the 50 years I had known John.
John lived on Third Street in Santa Monica about 800 feet around the corner from me. I had coffee with him every morning. He always had a joke for me. My dog Man Ray was allowed in his house. Ray loved hearing the jokes. In 1973 I had the opportunity to try out New York so I loaned John my studio. 2001½ Main Street. It was a great space. 3000 square feet with 20 foot ceilings for $250 a month on the corner of Bay and Main between Jeff Ho’s surf store and Gary Weiss the filmmaker. The gallery world opened up for me while I was in New York. And also for John. We both showed with Sonnabend and Konrad Fischer and were often in Europe together. I have funny stories about me and John which I will tell you some other day. They are very funny.
But then, as it turns out, I never did move back to California. When I visited I would stop by to see John and moon over my studio… our studio. It looked the same. John always reminded me to be sure to collect the big cardboard box I had left behind. But I never did. In l988 it appeared in my studio in New York, courtesy John, a box full of early photos along with a chair, too broken to sit in but that John remembered had appeared over and over again in my videos and photos from this time.
And now John is gone. And that’s that.”
