Can you see the sparks flying between these lovebirds? This is the classic love story of Vertumnus and Pomona and these two are in the process of falling for each-other. He was the Roman god of seasons and she made plants and trees bear fruit. He fell in love with her and, to his considerable credit did not force, rape or abduct her, you know, the sort of thing gods usually do when they fancy someone. Instead he tried to trick her by changing shape. He appeared to her in a different guise four times (it is four because he is the god of seasons) and talked to her. Three times, she turned him away, the fourth he appeared as an elderly woman that told her that vines grow best up an old tree, meaning that men and women can benefit from each-others strengths. That did it for her. She fell in love too and they lived happily ever after. In this painting, we see Pomona with her usual attributes, fruit (grapes in this case) and a knife. Vertumnus is the old woman. He points up at the tree to the right of the painting, with vines growing on it. Some say that he used trickery to get to her, but is that so bad? Don’t we all disguise ourselves just a little bit to appeal to a potential lover? And besides, when we look at her, we see she isn’t fooled for a second. She knows exactly what is going on, and maybe she appreciates the fact that he is making an effort. I just made a video about this story. You can find it on my youtube channel Stories of Art. And if you want to do me a favour, please subscribe.

I recently read the “Metamorphoses” by Ovid and I didn’t realise how many of the myths that I learned in school originated from that specific work! While I was interested in reading this book for a while, my main motive to do so was because a lot of the (Greek/Roman) mythical allusions in Shakespeare were taken from Ovid (because he himself read the “Metamorphoses” and probably also the “Heroides”)... in fact I think that I recently read in a book about Shakespeare that 80% of all of his allusions are Ovidian! Since I’ve read this book, I have also found myself seeing references to it in other places. Naturally, Christopher Marlowe, too, has some in his plays and recently when I went to an art gallery, I found a lot of paintings depicting the stories.

I just finished Girl Meets Boy by Ali Smith. It’s part of the myth series that @canongatebooks did around a decade ago and is based on the myth of Iphis and Ianthe from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. It explores the politics of gender, love, sisterhood, corporate life, and whether water is a privilege or a right. It’s a quick read, but packs a lot of punch. Some parts reminded me a little of Fleabag - although I only saw a few episodes of Fleabag and wasn’t really into it, and I quite liked this book. I had to include a picture of the book without it’s jacket because it’s such a fun shade of bubblegum pink! I also included my awesome new planter by @love_dalia_boutique that I picked up at @designarchivesvintage yesterday! Isn’t she gorgeous?! But yeah, if you’re into mythology or lgbtq fiction or stories about sisters, definitely check this book out! #girlmeetsboy #alismith #canongatemyths #canongatebooks #iphis #iphisandianthe #ovid #metamorphoses #ovidsmetamorphoses #readin2019 #recentlyread #recommendedreading #bookworm #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #mypersonallibrary #readabook #readingisfundamental #readersofinstagram #bibliophile #femaleauthors #femalewriters #womanwriter

_jessreadsbooks I can’t wait to read this and also, Fleabag gets SO GOOD, especially season 2.

shy1persephone @_jessreadsbooks I’ll have to give it another chance. I think I only watched the first 2 or 3 episodes.

Yesterday I wrappped up my Ovid Metamorphoses unit in Lit class, including coverage of the Salmacis and Hermaphroditus story in book 4. This morning I was listening to Genesis' Nursery Cryme, an album I'm less familiar with. Scanning the lyrics I noticed the last track is called The Fountain of Salmacis. Ovid is everywhere. #serendipity #ovid #metamorphoses #nowlistening #cdstagram #literature
