Geminid Meteors over Chile Image Credit & Copyright: Yuri Beletsky (Carnegie Las Campanas Observatory, TWAN)Explanation: Are meteors streaming out from a point in the sky? Yes, in a way. When the Earth crosses a stream of Sun-orbiting meteors, these meteors appear to come from the direction of the stream -- with the directional point called the radiant. An example occurs every mid-December for the Geminids meteor shower, as apparent in the featured image. Recorded near the shower's peak in 2013, the featured skyscape captures Gemini's shooting stars in a four-hour composite from the dark skies of the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. In the foreground the 2.5-meter du Pont Telescope is visible as well as the 1-meter SWOPE telescope. The skies beyond the meteors are highlighted by Jupiter, seen as the bright spot near the image center, the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy, seen vertically on the image left, and the pinkish Orion Nebula on the far left. Dust swept up from the orbit of active asteroid 3200 Phaethon, Gemini's meteors enter the atmosphere traveling at about 22 kilometers per second. The 2019 Geminid meteor shower peaks again this coming weekend.

A setting sun casts long shadows from dry brush along a steep side of a sand dune. The sun is an amazing artist.I have space in my Eastern Sierra workshop this coming February, where we spend plenty of time exploring the amazing sand dunes of Death Valley. Get in touch if you are interested!

Happy International Mountain Day! The theme this year is "mountains matter for youth". I don't honestly know where I'd be today if I hadn't discovered the transformative power found in the mountain world as an 18 year old kid. Spending time in mountains literally changed my life's direction and helped to inform many life choices I made over the past 25 years. Mount Rainier in particular has always been a place of personal significance for me. It was the lure of Rainier which drew me to relocate to the Pacific Northwest in the late 90's. I've visited countless times over the years, explored much of the park, climbed to it's icy crown a handful of times, and made the hundred mile trek around its base. Rainier is even the place where my wife and I first connected. So it's only fitting I post this image from a short but sweet solo trip this past summer. _________________________________________________#internationalmountainday #rainier

Northern Hawk Owl - June 2019Owls are awesome. Theyre by far my favourite birds, and the Northern Hawk Owl is one of the coolest. I remember many years ago when me and a friend of mine got a pair in one of the nesting boxes we put up. These guys get so angry when you get close to their nest.. Theyre like a pair of kamikaze bombers! If youre not prepared youre gonna have a heart attack and possibly a sore head :-) Last week i was on one of my many fishing trips when i stumbled across a nesting site. This guy was serious! I rushed through the area to not stress them too much, but i had to take a few shots first. He came in like a crazy jet plane and landed right above me, Roughed up his feathers in a weird way and tried to look as big and angry as possible.Quite a character, eh?
