Justice X, Just Is NOW
I recall the moment as if it were yesterday, looking at us NOW, watching Justice X measuring the space between he and I as if it were a corn hole or a grave. He had spotted me in Union Square and as both our eyes made four he paused... in the NOW
NOW to you folks reading this; these two comparisons might birth a shrug or a measure of ignorance, but to me, he wanted to know if our coming together NOW would reap food or end in his continued demise. You see I had not seen him in years, not since the rumours.
We traded small talk until our words became like baseball cards. Each line dancing through a wormhole, and in each picture of NOW the frame revealed a better sentence. Justice’s smile betrayed his stiff mask. His laughter felt old and beaten up. The edges of his words appeared bent and wrinkled. It was like they had been turning them in his pocket for too long, and the sweat and crumbs from his coat had made them soft and moldy. However the smell was uniquely pungent, like the underside of your grandmother’s pillow, the fragrance of drool and old hair oil, and so I lifted up my eyes and listened.
It wasn’t long before he reached inside his pocket and pulled out “Pursuing Alphamathgraphica,” and I smiled at his beautiful rhythms and eloquent use of metaphors. He spoke to me of NOW.
Twelve years ago Justice fell and his life changed. In his own words,
“The pain is what changed my life. It sent me into an altered mental status, in other words I became insane. Over five years I saw close to 750 doctors but no medicine seem to help. Insurance is a disaster for those not working. I feel like I was swindled out of life, the lie is truth and NOW is always NOW in each point of life.”
We talked about doing a book together. The whole time I am watching his lips and I kept feeling the spirit of Amiri Baraka with the eyes and deliberate desperation of Charles Bukowski.
“Let’s do a book and call it ‘La Sophist of the Fallen,’ he said smiling.
“This would be my life,” he added.
“This is NOW.”
