We haven't visited this bar yet but hope to make it over there one day! Well known on Instagram thanks to their super visual shots and cocktails, our #BarOfTheWeek is @viscosity1.⠀ ⠀ Located in Brisbane, Australia, Viscosity is part cocktail bar, part science lab! Under the illuminating glow of UV lights, the bartenders create drinks that are like mini works of art. 🧪 ⠀ ⠀ Check out some of their creations here on Insta and let us know if you've been to the bar - we'd love to know how these things taste! #DelightfulDrinks⠀ ⠀ 📷 = @viscosity1

Put the Lime in the Coconut⁣ -⁣ • 2 oz Angostura White Oak Rum⁣ • .75 oz Lime Juice⁣ • .5 oz Simple Syrup⁣ • .5 oz Each - Unrefined Virgin Coconut Oil and Canned Coconut Milk to clarify ⁣ ⁣ • Combine first three ingredients and stir well without ice. ⁣ • Heat the coconut oil and milk combo until liquid and stir until well combined⁣ • Pour coconut mix into clean glass jar and slowly pour in Daiquiri and stir or shake to fully combine. ⁣ • Let sit for an hour stirring occasionally.⁣ • Chill, but not freeze, in fridge or freezer so coconut oils clump a bit more. (You have to help it out a bit unlike regular milk clarifying)⁣ • Strain through coffee filter and don't squeeze too hard at the end as the coconut oil has such a low melting point it will end up back in the drink. Just accept a small amount of loss. ⁣ • Chill cocktail in fridge and give a quick stir over ice before serving. ⁣ • Garnish with a floating lime slice.⁣ -⁣ Fat washing or clarifying using coconut or traditional milk mellows the sharpness of the alcohol, but also adds sweetness and flavor so I lowered the simple syrup volume to account for that final step. I tried upping the citrus as well, but found this to be smoother and more balanced in the end. ⁣ -⁣ Simple Syrup⁣ 1:1 Raw turbinado sugar and water.⁣ -⁣ ⁣ #putthelimeinthecoconut #coconutdaiquiri #daiquiri #coconutmilkpunch #milkpunch #cocktailscience #vegancocktails #cocktailstyle #cocktailsofinstagram #trinidad #trinidadrum #caribbean #caribbeanrum #rumdrinks #angosturarum #angosturahouse #rum #rumlovers #classiccocktails #tiki #tikiaf #tropicaldrinks #summercocktails #kitchenscience #foodandwine #thrillist #thirsty #cocktailphotography #foodphotography #imbibegram @angosturahouse

Do you know what the rule of thumb is for when to shake a cocktail, when to stir it, and when to "build" it in the glass?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Keeping in mind that I'm a passionate believer that when you're in your own kitchen you get to take whatever damn artistic license you want with your cocktails, there IS actually a general rule of thumb that can help you to figure out whether a cocktail should be shaken, built, etc.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Cocktails that contain only "clear" or like ingredients (spirits, bitters, vermouth, etc, should be stirred. (See why it drives the purists mad when James Bond orders his martini "shaken not stirred?"). This keeps the one from "bruising" the alcohol, but also keeps it free from ice chips, which will continue to dilute the drink after poured as the ice chips melt. It also changes the mouthfeel because tiny little air bubbles are incorporated into the drink when shaken. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀A total aside, but my guess is that James Bond doesn't actually enjoy the full taste of martinis, as shaking a cocktail will get it colder, faster, and the colder a drink is the less flavorful it is (I see you ice-in-the-wine people ;)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Cocktails that contain translucent ingredients or ingredients with different compositions/viscosities should be shaken. think any cocktail with fruit juice, egg white, or cream. These cocktails need to be shaken to really mix the different components together for a consistent taste throughout the entire drink. The act of shaking also provides cocktails that contain egg white that beautiful foamy head from the air bubbles that are incorporated while shaking. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Cocktails that have sparkling ingredients in them should be built in the glass. Think vodka tonic, French 75, etc. If you shake or stir these cocktails it'll force the CO2 out of the cocktail faster and make it taste flat, which nobody wants.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀So there you have it! Now go mean mug your neighbor for shaking their Old Fashioned's ;) Venue: @WhiteAvenueStudio⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Photographer: @VineandLight⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Stylist: @WovenbyWhit

Curious why some cocktails are shaken and others are stirred? James Bond may have a preference, but there is real science as to why these different mixing techniques are used!Shaking can give certain drinks texture by aerating, emulsifying and integrating ingredients. When should you shake and when should you stir? Find out at the #Artistry of Alcohol on August 8th (link in bio!)

Happy Brunch day! Let’s talk alcohol🍸.Alcohol takes away from fat oxidation. Alcohol is metabolized differently than your other macro nutrients. No matter what alcohol you choose there will be some type of metabolic disturbance (yes even red wine, although there are more health benefits to red wine than other drink choices). But why does this happen/matter? .1. Alcohol has no nutritional value therefore our body doesn’t need it, so there is no storage form for it. 2. The body thinks it’s a toxin (alcohol is broken down into acetaldehyde & then to acetate) so it’s the first thing it wants to rid from the body — Bc our body wants to rid alcohol first and foremost, it stops metabolizing fat.3. Caution yourself around sugar saturated drinks — all those extra calories from super sugary mixed drinks will not be used readily, it will get stored as fat**.Summed up: Per hour, 1 unit of alcohol leaves the body, so depending how long and how much alcohol you drink determines how long your fat oxidation is on hold (Do your math from there🤓)..BUT ON THE POSITIVE...💃🏽Alcohol is known as a way of unwinding, being great refreshers for social gatherings, a big part of culture, etc. So don’t be scared to have a glass or 2 bc you may “mess up” the bod or gains or stop weight loss. Focus more on enjoying the present moment w the people you’re with instead of having those worries in your head! Have that beverage of choice!#liveabalancedlife #drinkinmoderation #cocktailscience #inspo #infoalert #foodie #cheers #happysunday
