There is this saying that no one man is an island in psychology. I think the idea is that humans are ultimately social beings and we need the interaction of others in order to maintain some sort of psychological equilibrium. I can see how this is true. The most brutal form of punishment in prison is to be sent to solitary confinement. If I go on a streak of 2 or 3 days without any sort of interaction, I feel myself getting restless and anxious. I really think social media is a pseudo-form of social interaction. Social media is just a prop for social interaction. Why else is it such a large source of anxiety and loneliness? Maybe I’m wrong. But that brings me to the other side of solitude. So many people profess solitude as the force behind creativity and breakthrough thoughts. There are numerous religious figures that venture out into some form of abyss in solitude to receive enlightenment. The entire premise of David Thoreau’s, “Walden,” is solitude in nature. Where does the idea of no man is an island ring true in these instances? Does the difference really rest between force and voluntary? That seems overly simplistic. I got to catch up with a few close friends and as everyone is having their own conversations I got to look around and see the community of people around me. It really does get difficult to have these gatherings where everyone’s schedule aligns, especially as we get older. In this rare moment, I thought of the notion that no man is an island. As someone who is prone to a solitary existence, I remember thinking how great it felt to be part of a group. I definitely think there is a dichotomy to this subject. Maybe I’m confusing loneliness with solitude. And there lies my inability to balance the two out. Either way, I think loneliness and solitude are both necessary.#35mm #35mmfilm #kodak #streetphotography #photojournalism #aperturefnd #skidrow #magnumphotos
